What if we told you that the easiest way to maintain a healthy weight and improve your health and happiness is to do something every single day that makes you feel great? That something could be as simple as a few minutes of yoga.
Imagine this: You are a busy mom who is constantly chasing her baby or babies. Chances are some days will be great and some days won’t ….. Well, not so much. But you wouldn’t trade it for anything! Being a mother is a wonderful thing – messy, sticky, stressful, guilt-ridden, fun, awesome.
But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t find something else you enjoy doing at the same time!
Finding something you love to do will make you an even better mom than you already are! (And contrary to what many moms think of themselves, you’re actually a good mom! Don’t forget that!)
For me, it was something like yoga. And it has changed my life, the way I raise my children, and the dynamics of my family. If these reasons aren’t enough, I want to share with you a few more reasons why you should do yoga as a mom!
1. Improve your body image.
As women, we tend to care about our bodies, even the smallest things! For example, wake up in the morning, look in the mirror and say to yourself: Oh, my God. It’s going to take some work this morning.
Yoga teaches us to live without judging ourselves or others. We learn this in the asanas, the postures on the mat.
If we feel good about a certain attitude one day and can’t do it the next, it reminds us that we are human, yes, we are imperfect, but we are perfect. We are good as we are, and we are beautiful.
2. Own your body.

Motherhood places high demands on a woman’s body. You literally give up your body for 10 months to raise a tiny human, and no one warns you that these demands on your body won’t go away after the baby is born.
When you choose to become a mother, you are giving up your body for the long haul.
The presence of yoga in your life gives you the space and time to take ownership of your body. You are strong and graceful, and your yoga practice will remind you of that. Let’s face it, moms – it’s nice to have a memory like that!
3. Learn to be patient.
When you do a series of yoga exercises, either at home or in a class, you often notice that you hold a pose for several breaths. At some point you will notice that you are shaking and your body is sending a signal to your brain: Get the hell out of here.
As you force yourself to take a breath and stay there, remember that nothing is permanent.
It seems silly to combine something as simple as adopting a yoga pose with the daily challenges our children pose to our patience, but as a mom, every little bit counts.
A little reminder to yourself that nothing lasts forever, when your kids get out the crayons and start coloring the whole couch, might be just what you need to keep yourself from locking yourself in a room somewhere!
4. Acquire physical fitness.
Yoga is a wonderful tool that brings the beautiful energy of self-love and self-acceptance into your life. In addition to the peace and tranquility we all seek, practicing asana will challenge your physical strength. We all know how important endorphins are to the body and mind.
They help exude a different kind of confidence and glamour.
It’s fine to focus on the mental and emotional benefits of your practice (like self-love and self-acceptance), but don’t underestimate the way your physical asana practice can help you maintain a positive body image!
5. Teach your little ones invaluable lessons.
Some of my most fun and happy moments are when my 4 year old rolls out his yoga mat and practices yoga next to me, or when my 1 year old jumps on my mat and sits in a head down dog pose.
You’ll find that you don’t really have to teach your little ones anything technical to make them understand how fun yoga can be. If they want to join you, your heart will melt knowing that one day they will learn the power of yoga!
Teaching your child yoga means teaching him or her all these things: Patience, healthy body image, physical fitness and self-control. How wonderful it would be if our generation of children, as they grow up, knew these things and put them into practice. It might even change the world!
