1. Feet on the wall/Viparita Karani

This is my favorite recovery position. Lying on the floor with legs extended and leaning against the wall has many physiological benefits. First, it relieves your sore and tired legs and feet. Bringing the feet above the heart helps reduce swelling and painful irritation.

This position also helps to calm and relax the nervous system. Stay in this position for 10 to 15 minutes before bed, you will fall asleep easily.

2. Intensive Western Pose Stretch/Pashchimottasana

This forward bend is one of the most soothing and refreshing for the mind. Turning inward is one of the most common actions used in yoga to relax. If you can rest your forehead against something in this position, the calming effect is enhanced. Using a neck pillow or some folded blankets to make room for your head to rest in this position will help you let go.

3. Standing Forward Bend/Uttanasana Variation

My favorite variation of Uttanasana for relaxation is to stand with your feet hip-width apart, your knees slightly bent and your torso draped over your legs, fully extending your spine. Then I cross my arms and squeeze the opposite elbows with my palms.

It’s a great way to create space in the back and neck and create that inner fold that calms the brain and body. Gravity will do its work by pulling your upper body towards your feet, which will help create a deep sense of grounding.

4. Child’s posture with wide knee/Balasana

Doing balasana with the knees far apart, so that the abdomen has room to relax from the floor, is very strengthening. In this pose, you get the action of folding inward, as well as a slight pressure on the forehead that helps calm and soothe the mind.

This pose is also ideal if you have tight hamstrings, as you get a forward bend without having to open the back of your body.

This pose is appropriate any time of day when you need a little break to recharge your energy.

5. Body position / Savasana

This is the most perfect resting posture where you need to focus your mind on calmness. In Savasana, you relax all your muscles and allow yourself to be held by the floor. It’s incredibly relaxing.

This posture differs from sleep in that you allow your body complete freedom while your conscious mind remains awake. The practice of savasana – concentrating the mind on the breath, a mantra or not concentrating at all – will be valuable if your life is very stressful. By learning to let go, both physically and mentally, you will greatly increase the amount of peace in your life.
