Yoga is more popular than ever, and for good reason: It’s fun, it’s effective, and it can help you to stay healthy and fit. Yoga is a wonderful way to increase your strength, flexibility, and balance. More than just a physical practice, it can also help you to relax and improve your mental health.
Again, this is a blog that has no theme, so I don’t know what category of blog to put it in, so I just put yoga in the “Health” category.
One of the most common questions I get asked is “How do you practice yoga?” (which can be shortened to “what do you do when you do yoga?”) This is a valid question, because practicing yoga is a lot more than doing a few poses and some breathing exercises. Yoga is a lifestyle, and it’s a practice, unlike any other. It’s a practice that involves the body, mind, and spirit.
One of the best ways to inspire an ongoing commitment to the practice of yoga is to remind ourselves of the power of our commitment to the practice and the benefits we receive when we follow that practice. Sounds simple, doesn’t it?Many yoga practitioners, including myself, find that keeping a practice journal is a quick, easy and inspiring way to track the progress of our personal yoga practice and the results of our dedication to our time on the mat. Below are some things to consider when putting together your personal yoga journal.
Condition before exercise
You’re not the only one who doesn’t want to exercise because you have a bad mood, are in the middle of a 30 Rock marathon, or just don’t feel like exercising. Some days we have to respect this feeling, but usually, if we come in with the feeling (insert pre-practice state here), we come out of Savasana with an extraordinary feeling. Tracking this transformation can be a serious tool to get you on the mat on days when you can’t fully train.
Description
Realizing what you are doing on the mat will help you see the patterns in your energy related to your practice, and it will give you a boost as you reflect on the growth you are experiencing on the mat. You will also be able to better manage the flow of your practice and determine when to retreat or move on to a more restorative or balancing yin practice.
Duration
Some of us are very good at keeping track of the length of the exercise, while others may overlook this element. Ask yourself if tracking your workout time encourages you to get on the mat on days when you don’t have much time, if it reminds you that short periods of time can produce big results, and if the overall effect is positive – if you answer yes, add this section to your workout log.
Feelings
Tracking how we feel after investing in our self-care practices is powerful work. As you flip through the pages filled with words like joy, connection, and success, you may find yourself reconnecting with your practice or getting inspired again.
nuts
Don’t forget to set aside a column for everything else – notes, space for journal entries, a space to note other factors useful to your practice. In this area, take as much time as possible to think and take notes, and give yourself the opportunity to explore different methods of taking notes.
Take some time to journal about your dream practice and incorporate some of the columns above to help you create or rediscover a new practice and stay on track with your current yoga home practice.
