Asian wings aren’t exactly the same as their American counterparts. With a thinner, crispier skin, they don’t have the same texture as fried chicken. However, they’re often more flavorful and have a slightly more complex taste. The key to success with Asian wings is to cook them with a sauce that marries well with the flavors of the wings. These Asian Orange Wings give chicken wings a special sweet and salty taste by adding soy sauce, rice vinegar, honey and orange marmalade. I’m a real fan of uncooked food. You know what I mean: Food that is fried, but has the crunchy taste of fried food, but with far fewer calories. I’ve been making my crispy oven wings since about …… Why? Because they’re healthier than fried foods, because they’re so easy, and most importantly because they’re incredibly delicious. So I took the recipe for Asian Wings with Orange Sauce as a base, and tweaked it to capture the flavors of the East. Later: We love Asian food. Okay, we likell food, but still, Chinese food is special. One of our favorite restaurants in Scottsdale is Flo’s. This place is absolutely amazing for many reasons. First and foremost, it’s the food. Every dish is just perfect and very tasty. You know P.F. Chang’s? F for Flo. She was the wife of one of the founders of P.F. Chang’s. Paul and Flo. After her divorce, Flo decided to open her own restaurant, which led to another, and another. Their food is excellent, their service is excellent, their menu is huge, and every restaurant is packed every day with people waiting their turn. Is it loud in there? Oh, yeah… because it’s always busy. One of the dishes we often ordered was orange chicken. Flo doesn’t release her recipes, so I had to improvise to get as close as possible. Flo uses breaded and fried chicken breasts, but I thought my crispy fried wings could replace them, as long as I changed the spices to more Middle Eastern flavors like ginger and Five Spice. I kept the cayenne pepper because it has a really spicy flavor. And then there was the sauce. It had all the flavor!
How to make Asian orange wings sauce
I started with chicken broth, orange zest and juice. Then I added rice vinegar, a little soy sauce, a combination of honey and orange marmalade, and garlic. I cooked it for about 5 minutes until it had shrunk a bit, then drizzled it lightly over my hot, crispy fried wings, which I had placed on a platter of shredded lettuce. The result is crispy Asian wings with an orange sauce. Was that Flo’s orange chicken? Only Flo can do it. But it was delicious. And my chief tester said he could easily eat 10 more wings. So I guess this is my new wing recipe. If you liked this recipe, leave a comment below and pin us on Pinterest! Print Recipe
