Cast Iron Cookware Tips That’ll Keep Your Pans Pristine “No matter how shiny and new and perfect it looks, your cast iron cookware will eventually show signs of wear and tear. This is a fact of life. ”
For the year-long challenge, I decided to make my own cast iron pan. This is a relatively inexpensive investment for delicious, healthy food. I’ve been working with cast iron for years, and have enough experience with these pans to feel confident about the best ways to care for them.
Are you cooking with cast iron?
I love cooking in cast iron cookware! It is economical, has a natural non-stick coating and is very versatile. Cast iron can easily be used on the stove, in the oven, on an open grill or fire. If you follow these tips for cooking with cast iron, your cookware will last for decades.
You’ll soon see that it’s not that hard!
1. Wash cast iron by hand, do not put in dishwasher.
Just wipe the food from the pan and rinse it in hot water in the sink with a brush or sponge. Wipe down plates immediately after cooking (while food is still hot) rather than waiting until food has hardened and formed a crust.
2. Use coarse salt to remove food residue.
Try scrubbing stubborn food particles with coarse salt, which can be even more effective than soap. However, a small amount of dish soap can be used if necessary, according to lodge.mfg.com.
3. Dry cast iron pans immediately.
To prevent rusting, do not let cast iron cookware dry out. Make sure you use a towel to dry your hands completely.
4. Rub with vegetable oil to retain the spices.
After hand drying, pour a little more vegetable oil and rub it into the cast iron pan or skillet with a paper towel. This ensures that the natural non-stick coating remains intact until the next use and does not dry out. Hang the pan or store it in a dry place.
NOTE: If your cast iron pan or pan has become rusty or sticky, don’t worry! Bake it again. Visit Lodge.com for more helpful tips.
