Drs. David Ludwig and Walter Willett of Harvard University recently published a review paper in the New England Journal of Medicine that addressed this question emphatically no! Dr. Ludwig also contributed an essay to the online publication Medium.
We’ve written before that the advice to consume skimmed or low-fat milk instead of whole milk is unsupported by scientific data. In his assessment of the scientific evidence, Dr. Ludwig agrees, stating that there is no obvious connection between whole milk and obesity, cancer, or heart disease. He concludes that entire kinds of milk should be chosen if you wish to consume milk.
However, he goes on to suggest that we should probably not consume milk at all. This demonstrates that assertions that we require a lot of calcium from milk for our health and bones are incorrect and based on no data. Instead, he comes at the following conclusion:
Humans are not obligated to consume the milk of other animals. All of the nutrients found in milk may be found in adequate amounts in other foods. Kale, broccoli, almonds, seeds, beans, sardines, and other whole foods are all good sources of calcium.
